What is Road Trip ’86?
Road Trip ’86 is a browser game inspired by the spirit of classic
trail survival games, but reimagined as a messy, neon-lit 1980s
drive across America.
Instead of wagons and oxen, you’ve got a questionable vehicle,
a little cash, limited fuel, snacks that may or may not help,
and a dream of making it all the way west.
The game blends old-school survival decision-making with a road
movie feel: breakdowns, weird diners, junkyard miracles,
gas station panic, mixtape highs, and those rare moments where
the road opens up and everything feels possible.
The Inspiration
Road Trip ’86 is inspired by the structure and tension of
The Oregon Trail, while building something with its own
personality and setting.
This is not a historical trail game. It’s a stylized road trip
survival adventure that leans fully into late-night highways,
desert sunsets, cheap motels, faded maps, mixtapes, and neon
arcade energy.
Why Back Pocket Studio Made It
Back Pocket Studio is about creative ideas with personality.
Road Trip ’86 came from the idea of taking a familiar survival
loop and giving it a more playful, cinematic identity.
It’s part nostalgia, part parody, and part love letter to
road stories and classic games.
How the Game Works
Each run begins with a vehicle choice and an attempt to drive
from the Southeast toward California.
Along the way you manage:
- Fuel
- Cash
- Food
- Car health
- Mood
- Miles traveled
Random events can help or hurt you. Some are bad luck,
some are questionable decisions, and some are those weird
little moments that make a road trip memorable.
